It is also used to signify smoking or vaping, or to mimic the physical act of blowing out birthday candles, often paired with 🎂.

History

The face exhaling was officially added to the Unicode standard in 2020 as part of Emoji 13.1. It was developed to fill the gap for a specific facial expression representing heavy breathing or exhaustion that previous emojis like 😮 or 😩 couldn't quite capture.
