History
The basic selfie emoji was added to the Unicode standard in 2016 as part of Emoji 3.0. The ability to modify the skin tone was added shortly after to better reflect the diverse range of global social media users who participate in the selfie culture that exploded with the rise of front-facing smartphone cameras.
