Exclamation question mark

Exclamation question mark Emoji

Symbols

A combined punctuation mark featuring an exclamation point and a question mark layered over one another. It captures the exact moment of surprised inquiry or disbelief.

Usage Context

Used to convey a mix of confusion and shock, such as when someone is stunned by a piece of news or baffled by a strange question. It acts as a more intense version of or when a single mark isn't enough to express your reaction.

History

Known formally as the interrobang, this character was proposed in 1962 by advertising executive Martin Speckter to help copywriters convey excitement and uncertainty simultaneously. It found its way into digital typography and eventually the Unicode standard in 1999 to replace the clumsy practice of typing '?!'.
