Regional indicator symbol letter v

Regional indicator symbol letter v Emoji

Flags

A square-shaped icon featuring the letter 'V' in a bold, sans-serif typeface. It is one of a set of 26 regional indicator symbols specifically designed to pair together to form ISO country codes.

Usage Context

This emoji is almost exclusively used to trigger the display of a national flag on supported platforms. When placed next to another regional indicator letter, such as 'I' to create 'VI' (representing the Virgin Islands), the device software transforms the two characters into a single graphical flag. It is rarely used to represent the letter 'V' itself, unlike standard alphabet emojis like 🅰.

History

These symbols were introduced in Unicode 6.0 in 2010. They were added to provide a technical bridge for mobile operating systems to render flags without needing to create thousands of individual flag emoji files, instead relying on country-code pairings to map to flag images.
