History

This emoji was added in Unicode 6.0 in 2010. It is based on the 'Top' button found in early Japanese mobile phone interfaces, which allowed users to jump back to the main menu or the top of a webpage, mirroring navigation shortcuts seen in desktop browsers of the late 90s.
