Objects

A stiff, rectangular paper tag with a distinct notch at the top and a small hole, often colored in shades of orange or yellow. It mimics a physical scrap of cardstock used to hold a place in a book or label an item.

Usage Context

Widely used to indicate that a post, message, or article is worth saving for later. It serves as a digital reminder for future reading, much like a traditional bookmark tucked between the pages of a novel, or a price tag hanging from new retail merchandise. It is frequently seen alongside 📌 or when people are organizing their digital archives.

History

Included in Unicode 6.0 in 2010, the bookmark was added to assist mobile users in navigating the increasing volume of web content. Its design draws from early physical filing and library systems where paper markers were the only way to track progress through extensive documents.
