Usage Context
Widely used to indicate movement, travel, or the literal act of walking. It is frequently sent to show someone is going for a stroll, leaving a place, or following in someone else’s footsteps. It pairs well with 🏃 when talking about exercise or 👣 can be used to imply someone is being stalked or tracked.
History
These footprints were added to the Unicode standard in 2010 as part of Emoji 1.0. The design was heavily influenced by early Japanese cellular carrier sets, which often included pictograms for travel and outdoor activities to help users communicate their physical whereabouts before GPS sharing became standard.
