Person tipping hand: dark skin tone Emoji

People

A person with a dark skin tone holding one hand out, palm up, with their fingers curled as if they are resting their hair on their hand or offering information. The gesture is performed with an exaggerated, dismissive tilt of the head.

Usage Context

This emoji is the go-to for delivering a sarcastic retort, feigning indifference, or acting as if you are too good for a current situation. People use it to signal that they are being 'sassy' or to imply that the person they are talking to is being ridiculous. It is frequently sent alongside 🙄 to really drive home the eye-rolling attitude.

History

Based on the original 'Information Desk Person' character that first appeared in Unicode 6.0 in 2010, the gesture was meant to represent a service worker helping a customer. Over time, internet users repurposed the posture to look like a hair flip or a dramatic hand-flick, leading to its current reputation as the definitive 'sassy' character. The dark skin tone variant was added in 2015 with the rollout of Unicode 8.0.
