Flags

A black flag featuring a white skull and crossbones design. It is the international icon for piracy, often referred to as the Jolly Roger.

Used to signal a rebellious attitude, theme parties, or a love for nautical adventure. It is frequently sent when discussing movies, treasure hunts, or chaotic behavior. It is often paired with or 💰 to complete a maritime or loot-focused message.

History

Added to the Unicode standard in 2016 as part of Emoji 3.0, the pirate flag was introduced to provide a way for users to convey the theme of piracy without needing to type out the words. It draws on centuries of maritime history where the flag was flown by ships to intimidate targets into surrender.
