Regional indicator symbol letter z Emoji

Flags

A square icon displaying the bold, black capital letter Z. It belongs to a set of 26 regional indicator symbols designed to be rendered as flags when combined with another letter.

Usage Context

This emoji is rarely used on its own. Instead, it serves as the final building block for ISO 3166-1 country codes. When paired with another regional indicator, such as 🇦, it triggers a device to display the flag of a specific nation, such as the flag for South Africa 🇿🇦.

History

These symbols were introduced in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 to allow platforms to represent national flags without needing to create hundreds of individual emoji files. By using character pairs, developers created a flexible system to represent any country while keeping file sizes small.
