Usage Context

You won't see this letter standing alone very often. When it is placed next to another regional indicator, the two characters combine to form the ISO country code for a specific nation. For instance, pairing this with 🇦 creates the flag for Qatar. It is rarely used outside of these technical flag-building sequences.

History

These regional indicators were introduced in Unicode 6.0 in 2010. They were implemented to allow mobile operating systems to map specific pairs of letters to the corresponding graphical country flags, solving the problem of how to represent thousands of unique national emblems in a standard character set.
